What’s List and Hierarchy Custom Settings In Salesforce?

Once upon a time, there was a magical book where Mr. Johnson, who owned a special store, kept secrets about discounts for his customers. Imagine this book had two sections:

  1. The Discount List:
In one section of the book, Mr. Johnson wrote down the special discounts for different types of customers. Like how Gold customers got a 20% discount, Silver customers got 15%, and Regular customers got 10%.
  2. The Maximum Limit Section:
Then, there was another part where Mr. Johnson noted the highest discount each type of customer could get. For example, Gold customers could get a maximum discount of $50, Silver customers $30, and Regular customers $20.

So, whenever someone like Mrs. Smith, who was a Gold customer, came to the store and wanted a bigger discount because she bought a lot of things, Mr. Johnson checked his magical book. He saw that Gold customers could get a maximum of $50 off, but since Mrs. Smith was a very special customer, he made a note in his book to give her an even bigger discount just this one time.

So, the magical book helped Mr. Johnson keep track of discounts and make sure everyone was happy when they shopped at his store.

Note: To enable the List custom setting we have to first enable them in the schema settings(Setup–>Schema settings).

It’s recommended to use Custom Metadata instead of Custom Settings by Salesforce.
